A Guide to Twin Fin Surfboards
Why twins are back, what makes a great one, and how to find the right twin for your surfing.
What is a twin fin surfboard?
A twin fin is exactly what it sounds like: a surfboard with two fins. The setup is one of the oldest in modern surfing. Twins were the dominant performance fin configuration through much of the late 1970s and early 1980s, ridden by world champions like Mark Richards and credited with redefining what was possible on a surfboard. Then the thruster (three-fin setup) arrived in 1981, took over almost overnight, and twin fins largely disappeared from competitive surfing for decades.
But twin fins never really went away. A small but devoted group of shapers and surfers kept making them, kept riding them, and kept refining the designs. Over the last decade, twins have come back hard and not as a nostalgia trend. The boards being made today are some of the best twins ever shaped, combining the speed and freedom that made the original twins legendary with modern performance touches that let them hold up in waves the old boards couldn't handle.
Doc has been shaping twin fins since the 1980s. He's never stopped, and the designs in our current lineup represent four decades of refinement.
Why ride a twin fin?
The short answer: speed and feel.
A twin fin generates speed differently than a thruster. With only two fins, there's less drag in the water, which means a twin accelerates faster through flat sections and holds speed through turns where a thruster would slow down. That's why twins work so well in small, weak surf: there's enough speed in the board itself to make up for what the wave doesn't have.
The other reason is the feel. Thrusters are stable and predictable. Twins are looser, more reactive, more alive under your feet. They reward smooth, drawn-out lines and punish over-pumping. Once you adjust to surfing a twin, going back to a thruster can feel locked-in by comparison.
Twin fin styles: keel vs. modern upright vs. wing swallow
Not all twins are the same. There are three main twin fin shape philosophies, and choosing between them comes down to what kind of surfing you want to do.
Classic twins (keel-style)
These are the boards you'd recognize as classic 1970s and 1980s twins; full outlines, wide swallow tails, fins set back, and basic bottom contours. They're built around glide and speed, ridden with wide-base keel fins, and they reward smooth trim and long, drawn-out turns. The Surf Prescriptions Old School Twin sits squarely in this category. Doc has been shaping it forever and hasn't changed a thing, same as it ever was.
The Twin 82 is a close cousin: a 1980s wing-swallow design from the same era, with classic boxy rails and vee in the tail. Both are perfect for surfers who want that authentic retro feel; fast, loose, and unmistakably old-school.
Modern performance twins
Modern performance twins keep the speed of a classic twin but add features that let you push harder. Pulled-in tails, refined rocker, deeper concaves, and channels that give the board hold through steeper sections. These are twins you can actually drive through bigger surf without washing out.
The Twinny Two is the most aggressive shape in our lineup, built for surfers who want to push twin fins into solid surf. The Cal Twin is a high-performance twin recreated from a customer's early-80s magic board, refined with modern surfing in mind. The Wonder Twin features a round wing pin tail with channel hold for surfers who want twin fin freedom plus thruster-style bite.
Twin pin and hybrid shapes
Some twins blur the line between categories. The Tur-Twin Pin features a 4-channel turtle bottom and a round pin tail. A versatile shape that works in everything from punchy beach breaks to lined-up points. The Tur-Fish is a progressive mash-up of the Old School Twin and the V-12 Flying Turtle, keeping the retro fish glide while adding modern turning ability.
For mid-length surfing, the Slot Machine is a single-slot-channel twin that scales from shortboard dims to full mid-length. The Twin Royale is the most stylish mid-length twin Doc shapes, a deluxe wide-template cruiser with optional wood-grained keel fins.
How to choose the right twin
Here's how to think about which twin fits your surfing:
If you want the classic feel: looser, smoother, drawn-out turns, maximum glide. Go with the Old School Twin. Pair it with wide-base keel fins like the Triple T Keel Twins.
If you want performance: pushing hard, surfing in steeper waves, vertical maneuvers. Look at the Twinny Two, Cal Twin, or Wonder Twin. Pair them with upright fins like the Tallboy Twin Fins.
If you want versatility: a single board that handles a wide range of conditions, the Tur-Twin Pin and Tur-Fish are designed for exactly that.
If you want to explore mid-length twin fin surfing: longer rails, more glide, the Slot Machine and Twin Royale are where to start.
A note on fins
A twin fin board is only as good as the fins you put in it. The right fin set transforms how the board feels: drive, release, hold, and looseness all come from fin design.
Surf Prescriptions makes two signature twin fin sets in collaboration with NVS:
-
The Triple T Keel Twins are wide-base keel-style fins designed by Doc: fast, classic feel, perfect for retro twins.
-
The Tallboy Twin Fins are modern upright fins designed by Doc: snappy, responsive, perfect for performance twins.
We also carry the broader NVS lineup, including standard twin sets like the Nautilus Twins (an MR-style all-around template) and the Orca Twins (a larger template for heavier surfers).
